5th race day

5th race day

30 June 2017

Billy Besson (Sodebo Ultim’) : « We're trying to do the best we can in the ambient gloom. The little elastic work we did helped us to get closer to IDEC. The radar is connected, we stay very attentive while pushing the boat within reasonable limits. This transatlantic race aboard a trimaran ultimate is really interesting for me. I discovered a new way of sailing. It's completely different from what I used to do. And it's nice to race in this foggy atmosphere and play hide-and-seek with IDEC. Currently, we take what comes, we do what we can. We are not moving very fast, we really must be careful with our adjustments to make the boat move as much as possible. The first who gets out of this becalmed area will have a small advantage. »

Pascal Bidégorry (Macif) : « There is quite a lot of work, but it's not that bad, it's warms us up a bit! This morning, the air is very fresh with almost zero visibility. We're pretty happy with yesterday’s little refocus. Since this morning, we make our merry way, we do not have the same wind as our competitors behind. Currently we have between 10 and 14 knots of wind and we move forward starboard tack. »

Samantha Davies (Actual) : « It is humid this morning, in a very thick fog. We move at 20 knots. We aim for the ice exclusion zone which is ahead. The race to New York is long, especially for us as we are going slower than others. But, I'm having fun on this transat. We do not get bored, there is always something to do. There is a very good atmosphere on board, we're all pretty complementary. Weather forecasts are not reliable for the arrival, and it is difficult to predict a specific ETA. »

Francis Joyon (IDEC SPORT) : « The atmosphere is always as happy on board, including for those who had to work during their fifteen-minute sleep break, as we needed every available arm to get out of this windless bubble. The night was great, with speeds of 30 knots and more, close-hauled. The elastic loosened against us this morning as Macif has not been bothered by the bubble, which helped Sodebo to come back on us. Nonetheless, a lot can change in the next three days. Especially since the landing in the New York Bay looks particularly calm... »
